I am a public law and civil litigation lawyer in Ottawa and Vancouver.
Until recently I was Executive Legal Officer to the Chief Justice of Canada, the Rt Hon Richard Wagner PC (Dec. 2017 to Aug. 2018). Prior to that I was Executive Legal Officer to the former chief justice, the Rt Hon Beverley McLachlin PC (Aug. 2015 to Dec. 2017).
Before moving to Ottawa I spent ten and a half years practising civil litigation at Hunter Litigation Chambers in Vancouver. My practice included commercial litigation, real estate and environmental disputes, and a variety of public law matters.
In 2003 I was a law clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada to the Honourable Morris Fish and the Honourable Charles Gonthier. From 2001-2 I was a law clerk to the Honourable Jo-Ann Prowse of the Court of Appeal for British Columbia.
I am the author of Using International Law in Canadian Courts and other works on the reception of public international law in Canada. I have been an annual contributor to the Canadian Yearbook of International Law since 2004.
I have been a visiting scholar at the Lauterpacht Research Centre for International Law at the University of Cambridge, a visiting professor in the Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa and a sessional instructor in public international law at the University of Victoria.
